SeaWorld’s ‘One Ocean’ debuts April 22

One Ocean, featuring SeaWorld’s majestic killer whales, will open April 22. A preview of the show took place Tuesday.

However, as with Believe, which is still running, the trainers will interact with the whales from dry ground. SeaWorld is trying to find a safe way to allow them back in the water after trainer Dawn Brancheau was killed last year while working with Tilikum during the Believe show.

According to Julie Scardinia, curator for animal training for SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, Tilikum is now in rehearsal to join the new show, which will feature whales playing in giant fountains, doing high-energy leaps, performing with each other simultaneously. She said to keep the whales stimulated, trainers have been interacting with them using hoses, brushes, and toys.

“This new show brings to life SeaWorld’s mission in the most powerful way yet,” said Jim Atchison, President and Chief Executive Officer of SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. “This show is what guests love about our parks – thrilling entertainment that educates and inspires you to celebrate, connect and care for the world we share.”

I don’t want to play down their safety, but seeing a trainer on the nose of a whale was an exhilarating experience.

Believe will close when One Ocean opens. Along with Orlando, One Ocean will open in SeaWorld San Diego on Memorial Day weekend and at SeaWorld San Antonio in June.
