Castles Rival Any in Hogwarts Village

Harry Potter fans clutching a few dollars in their fists are welcome to put a down payment on a castle worthy of a US branch of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

They just have to choose location, square footage, and price.

A White Salmon, Wash., home was built to resemble at 13th century castles, but it’s a mere 23 years old. In true fortress fashion, it has a stone tower and curved windows, and it’s for sale for a mere $1.2 million.

If you’re looking for something slightly more upscale, check out a $5 million fixer-upper in Ossining, N.Y. The 4,337-square-foot castle sits on 50 secluded acres. Built in 1927 and now abandoned, it has four bedroom and 3.5 bathrooms.

At a more modest $2.995 million, there’s a 100-plus-year-old chateau designed by architect Norman Foster for Giuseppe Cosulich, a shipping line owner. Located in the Bronx, N.Y., it’s said to be a copy of the family chateau in Croatia. The Bronx? True to New York tradition, it’s been completed updated to include Sub-Zero appliances, air conditioning, Bose sound system, flat-screen televisions – wizardry be damned.

For those looking for more of a bargain, there are two places in Connecticut. One is even below $1 million: it’s a newly renovated, 3,355-square-foot castle in Orange for just $790,000 that was built in 1939. There are four bedrooms, 4 baths, and a guest house for out-of-town Muggles.

Up the road a bit in Stamford, there’s Chateau Rochamore, available for $1,099,000, built in 1906. In a winter setting the house is at home in Hogsmeade Village. Within 4,800 square feet, there’s five bedrooms five bathrooms, six wood-burning fireplaces and a great room with three-story-high beamed ceiling. For warm weathers, there’s an in-ground pool.

For those who can’t spend their money fast enough, there are castles for $6 million in Narraganesett, R.I., a French chateau in Great Barrington, Mass., for $11 million and a Beaux-Arts castle for $9.5 million.

Sigh. Given the success of the series, the only decision Harry and friends would need to make is, “Which one?”
