It’s a girl for Johari and Raffiki, residents of the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Fla.
The Masai giraffe was born Aug. 27. It was the fourth for Johari, whose other offspring include Melvin, 5, now a resident of the Metro Richmond Zoo; Stephanie, 3, who lives at Disney’s Animal Kingdom; and Joey, 1, who is still at Brevard. Giraffes have a gestation period of 400 to 460 days.
The Brevard Zoo is also home to another Masai giraffe, Milenna, who gave birth to a male, Rafeano, in April. They are expected to go on exhibit in early October.
The Masai species is only a small part of the zoo population. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums is looking to increase the population to 150 through its Population Management Plan.
Other giraffe species found in zoos are Reticulated and Rothschild.
