Resort Hotels: Peabody Orlando - Amenities

As noted earlier, all the hotel’s amenities are in the hotel. Even when you step outside it is onto spacious terraces on the third floor Recreation Level.

Peabody Ducks

Without a doubt, the hotel’s most important amenity is the arrival and departure of its signature ducks to the flower bedecked fountain in the lobby. Each morning at 11:00 a.m. they descend from their “Duck Palace” on the elevators and waddle along a red carpet and up special duck-sized stairs to the fountain, where they splash about merrily and entertain kids of all ages. At 5:00 p.m. sharp the process is reversed as they troop dutifully back upstairs to their off-duty lodgings by the tennis courts on the Recreation Level.

All of this is overseen by Duck Master Dave, resplendent in a scarlet frock coat bedecked with golden epaulets and braid and carrying a cane topped with a golden duck head. He is ably assisted by one or two young guests who, in recognition of their service, are solemnly inducted as “Honorary Duck Masters of the Royal Order” with a gentle tap of the golden duck head on each shoulder.

I know it all sounds unbelievably silly, but trust me, you’ll love it. If you want your child to participate (and you do!), call the concierge as soon as you know when you will be staying at the hotel. It’s strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. If you find you’re too late, you can have your child put on a standby list as cancellations and no-shows do happen.

A long, narrow pool, almost Olympic-size in length, sits atop the hotel’s entrance portico on the Recreation Level. A niche on one side houses two lap lanes for serious swimmers, but there’s plenty of room to just loll about, if that’s more your speed. To one side is a comfortably sized kiddie pool, complete with waterfall.

There’s plenty of lounging space as well as a jacuzzi spa that can accommodate a fair sized group. A terrace a few steps above the pool offers still more lounging chairs as well as tables that surround a pool bar. Light meals are offered in addition to the usual range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments. You can eat by the bar, or be served by wandering waiters anywhere in the pool area. At either end of the pool are cabanas which can be rented by the half or full day; a twilight special is also offered. The pool is open from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Fitness Center

The fitness center, or the Peabody Athletic Club as they like to call it, is on the Recreation Level, near the pool. It is a compact facility with a full range of Nautilus machines and a small selection of treadmills, stairclimbers, and stationary bikes. Free weights and dumbells are available for traditionalists. The men’s and women’s locker rooms contain steam rooms and saunas, with a shared coed jacuzzi.

Tennis Courts

Four hard surface tennis courts sit side by side on a terrace at the rear of the Recreation Level. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; there is no charge, but reservations are required. Racquets can be rented for a modest fee and balls are available for sale. Lessons are also available. The Peabody Athletic Club can handle all arrangements.

Golf Pro Shop

Just by the tennis courts is a golf shop operated by Captain’s Choice Golf Services. The Peabody doesn’t have its own golf course, but here you can gain access to 20 different area courses, many of them at a discount. Part of the service provided by Captain’s Choice is matching players of varying levels of ability to the right course for them. Transportation is $50 for a twosome or a foursome and clubs can be rented for another $50. Greens fees range from $75 to $125 in the torrid summertime to $125 to $280 in the peak season, during the winter. For more information, call (407) 352-1102 or extension 4491 within the hotel. Captain’s Choice web site is: www.oflgolf.com

Salon and Spa

The Shala Salon & Spa is also located on the Recreation Level and although it looks very much like a standard-issue hair salon, they offer an extensive menu of services beyond the usual hair design and hair coloring, including bikini waxes and something called a Chocolate Latte Manicure. Various packages that combine a number of treatments are available at suitably astronomical prices. The telephone is 407-248-8009 or on the Internet at: www.shalasalon.com
