William H. Waterhouse, a home builder and cabinetmaker by trade, came to Central Florida in the early 1880s and put his obvious skills to use building a handsome family residence overlooking tiny Lake Lilly. Today, it serves as a monument to gracious living in a simpler, less stressful time.

Lovingly restored and maintained by volunteers, the house contains many items of furniture fashioned by Mr. Waterhouse in the carpentry shop behind the home. The home itself is furnished throughout and looks as if the Waterhouse family had just stepped out for a moment. Do-it-yourselfers will marvel at the fine detail work and the lavish use of heart of pine, a favorite of builders of the period because it was impervious to termites. It is rare today because few loggers are patient enough to let pines go unharvested long enough for this prime lumber to develop.

Tours are conducted by knowledgeable volunteers who will provide you with many insights into this charming home and the people who lived here. If you arrive when a tour is in progress, you may find the door locked. Just take a seat in the comfortable chairs on the porch; a volunteer will be with you shortly. Tours last about 30 to 40 minutes.

The museum offers two children’s programs that transport kids back to the late 1800s. Carpentry Crew ($12) showcases woodworking and building techniques while Hats and Teas ($10) focuses on social etiquette. These programs are designed for kids in grades three and up. Call for more information and to make reservations, which are required.
