Type: Walk through exhibit of exotic animal husbandry
Time: About 20 minutes
Short Take: A clever idea well executed
A lot of fascinating stuff happens behind the scenes at a major zoo. Busch has had the clever idea of turning that into an attraction to delight and inform its visitors. Here, in a spotlessly clean 16,000-square-foot facility guests make their way through a series of state-of-the-art facilities where they can watch through glass walls what goes in to the care and feeding of Busch Gardens' 200 different species.
In the Nutrition Center, which looks like something you might expect in the studios of the Food Network, animal nutritionists conduct regular demonstrations on how they prepare meals for their animal charges; from time to time guests can join in. The Treatment Rooms allow surgery on animals from small to large while overhead critter cams allow onlookers a closer look. In the diagnostic area, visitors can watch the routine procedures like sonograms and teeth cleaning that are performed on a variety of exotic creatures every day.
Obviously there's no way of telling exactly which animals will be having what procedures on the day of your visit, but a variety of interactive exhibits is available to keep guests occupied on slow days..
